Learn What Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Is In London

DBT stands for dialectical behaviour therapy and is a method of cognitive-behavioural therapy. This form of therapy is designed to help individuals in their everyday lives, in order to process emotions and help with the relationships with others in your lives. Stress can play a major role in life at times, but DBT will help you learn how to cope with the stress and manage the emotions that arise from it.

DBT was originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan and colleagues in the late 1980s for the unique needs of certain patients struggling with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). They found that for certain individuals, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) was not as successful as hoped and so they needed to formulate and test a new style of therapy that would help to treat these patients. DBT is now also commonly used for other conditions such as substance misuse, bipolar disorder and depression.

Dialectics as a concept emphasises the notion that everything is interconnected, change is constant and ultimately inevitable and that opposite viewpoints can be integrated to form a more accurate viewpoint of the truth. The therapy teaches patients to become focused on ‘living in the moment’ in a way that they can observe what is happening both internally with their thoughts and feelings as well as externally in the world around them. This mindfulness practice will help the patient to remain calm in certain situations and refrain from automatically engaging in negative or impulsive behaviours.

The issue of change is prominent within this therapy and as such, the patient and therapist will focus on the notion of change and the emotions that surround this. It is a method where the contradiction between acceptance and change must be analysed in order to allow the patient to move forward with positive changes that are welcomed by the self.

Here at DBT London, we follow the strategies laid out previously in order to help treat individuals that may be suffering from BPD but also for other conditions such as substance misuse, depression, bipolar disorder and addiction.

The most charismatic counsellor I have met in my life. Not only he has all the knowledge and expertise that is needed but he is also able to see things from the patient's perspective and reach conclusions in a holistic way. He has a genuine interest for his clients and he is one of the most open-minded people I know. 110% Recommended.
