Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) For Borderline Personality Disorder (DBP) In London

Dialectical behaviour therapy is a structured treatment that was originally formulated as a means of treating patients with bipolar personality disorder in the late 1980s. The cognitive behavioural principles of DBT are essential in the therapy process for individuals not only with BPD but also other mental health conditions. Controlled trials showed results of this type of therapy in patients with other psychiatric disorders such as eating disorders, substance misuse and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

DBT can be structured into different mediums, however, traditional practices include individual therapy, telephone / video consultations, therapist team consultations as well as skills training groups. The main pillars of DBT training, distress tolerance, core mindfulness, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness will teach the patient to cope in a much more healthy way when adversity is faced.

These different elements of traditional DBT have been formulated to counter common symptoms of BPD, such as emotional instability, impulse behaviour, self harm and negative or difficult relationships with others. The emotional understanding and regulation will also help to allow the individual to process the feelings without becoming too consumed by them and potentially reverting to impulsive actions or negative behaviour.

Patients with BPD are highly susceptible to sudden and abnormal changes in emotions and have difficulty returning to a normal emotional state. The DBT techniques are used here to allow the patient to process the emotions and return to a healthier emotional state.

If left untreated, BPD can often lead to an escalation in the negative behaviours resulting in self-harm, overdoses and suicide. The suicide rate for individuals with BPD is over 400 times that of the general population, which is why DBT is a very necessary form of therapy when treating these patients.

The most charismatic counsellor I have met in my life. Not only he has all the knowledge and expertise that is needed but he is also able to see things from the patient's perspective and reach conclusions in a holistic way. He has a genuine interest for his clients and he is one of the most open-minded people I know. 110% Recommended.
